Samsung Galaxy 10.1 4G Tablet gives Apple’s iPad 2 some real competition

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 4G tablet has emerged as the iPad 2’s principal competition in terms of design, performance and user experience. The new Galaxy Tab is a definite improvement from its predecessor in size, and most notably performance.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G

The Galaxy Tab’s design compares favorably to the iPad 2. At 8.6 millimeters thick and about 20 ounces, it’s a tad thinner and lighter than Apple’s tablet. I found it easy to hold and maneuver.

The Galaxy Tab 4G also has a higher-resolution display than the iPad 2 -1280 by 800, vs. 1024 by 768 – and better cameras: 3 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera. The screen measures 10.1 inches diagonally, compared to the iPad’s 9.7 inches, though the Galaxy is narrower.

From a design perspective the Galaxy Tab 4G and iPad 2 are two peas in a pod but the real difference lies in their operating systems.  The Galaxy Tab runs on “Honeycomb“, Google’s tab-optimized version of its Android mobile operating system. Unfortunately for Honeycomb tablets, application developers are working at a snail’s pace to develop apps for Honeycomb.  While Apple claims more than 90,000 apps specifically designed for the iPad and its iOS operating system, there are fewer than 1,000 for Honeycomb.

In an effort to overcome the Galaxy Tab’s “app shortfall” Samsung has started pushing a major software upgrade out to users. The upgrade adds a company-customized user interface, called TouchWiz, as well as access to Samsung’s Music Hub and Media Hub stores for downloading songs, movies and TV shows, and a slew of new widgets and apps.

Another advantage over Apple’s iPad 2 is the Galaxy’s 4G status. While Verizon continues its nationwide rollout of its 4G network, Apple is slow to the challenge.  The iPad2 is only a 3G device which gives the Galaxy Tablet 4G something to brag about. Both devices allow users to connect to the Web via WiFi.

I am most impressed with the fluidity of the Android OS. It’s very easy to navigate from screen to screen, unlike the iPad2′s 1 key to navigate you back to the home screen.  Another added bonus is the Live Panels.  Live Panels are self-updating windows overlaid on the Honeycomb desktop. Each panel can be customized so you can view all your social media, check your email, and look at your photos at a glance.

The prices point for both devices are comparable: The 16GB model retails for $529.99, while the 32GB option goes for $629.99. If customers connect to Verizon’s LTE network, they’ll need to choose one of Verizon’s three data plans, which cost $30, $50, and $80 per month for 2GB, 5GB, and 10GB of data usage, respectively.

Both tablets are impressive in their own rite but if you favor the Android platform and live in a 4G zone then the Galaxy Tab 4G would be the Android tablet of choice.  If apps are what you crave and 3G suits you fine, then I would stick with Apples iPad 2.

Come by any of our Verizon Wireless City locations and check out the Samsung Galaxy Tablet 4G today!

No more unlimited data plans from Verizon Wireless – What does this mean for you?

As of July 7th, Verizon Wireless will no longer offer its unlimited data plan for new smartphone users.  New smartphone users will now have to choose a data plan from Verizon’s 3 Usage Based Data Pricing Plans.  What does this mean for you?

Current Smartphone Users

If you are a current smartphone user, including Blackberry, Droid and iPhone 4, with an unlimited data plan, you will not be affected by this change provided you stay within the smartphone category when you upgrade.  However, if you choose to switch out of the smartphone category you will have to accept Verizon’s new Usage Based or Tierd Data Plan.  The same holds true for current feature phone users seeking to upgrade into the smartphone category.

Here is a quick look at Verizon’s New Data Pricing:

Verizon’s Usage Based Data Plans

How much data do you need?

95% of Verizon Wireless smartphone customers use less than 2GB monthly, and on average customers use less than half than that amount. Data usage from a small percentage of high end users accounts for the majority of all the data used on our network. Instead of increasing the pricing for all of its customers, Verizon’s new Usage Based Data Pricing ensures you only pay for what you use.  Use a lot of data, and you’ll pay more; use a little, and you’ll pay less.

What can you do with 2GB?

2 Gigabytes is a lot of bytes, over 2 billion to be exact! For $30 per month you can:

 - Send 1000 Emails

 - Visit 200 Web Pages

 - Listen to 20 hours of radio

 - Upload 50 pictures to Facebook

 - Watch 1 hour of streaming video And STILL be under 2 Gigabytes per month!

OR

 - Send 250 emails, surf 25 websites, upload 10 photos, stream 10 minutes of video and 15 minutes of music EVERY DAY.

OR

 - Stream an hour of video, 15 minutes of music, surf 5 sites, upload 2 photos and send 250 emails EVERY DAY.

OR

 - Upload 50 photos, send 250 emails, surf 5 sites, stream 2 minutes of video plus one song EVERY DAY.

I think you get the gist – you can do a lot with 2 GB!  Considering the average Verizon Wireless user uses less than half that amount, 2 GB will be plenty for most users!

Why are Verizon’s Data Plans more expensive than AT&T?

Verizon’s 4G LTE network is the fastest, most advanced network in America – 2 times faster than AT&T’s 4G Network and 10 times faster than any 3G Network! With Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Network, you get faster upload and download speeds. Verizon Wireless operates the nation’s largest, most reliable 3G network.

2 GB of data on Verizon costs only $5 more than AT&T but considering Verizon’s network is superior to AT&T, I have no problem paying a little bit more for the best!

Monitoring Usage

One major concern customers have about Usage Based Data Pricing is not having the freedom an unlimited data package provides. Who wants to worry about monitoring usage to avoid additional charges? I agree, it’s nice to not have to worry but Verizon has made it very convenient for its customers to check usage with just the touch of a button.  Verizon smartphones come with a data widget to monitor your usage and you will be notified via text message when you have reached  50%, 75%, etc.  Customers can also key in # DATA on their smartphone or use the MyVerizon app that comes either pre-programmed on your phone or can be easily downloaded for FREE on the Android market

Overall, Verizon’s shift to usage -based pricing is fairer to the consumer.  Since most users don’t require more than 2GB they end up subsidizing heavy users. Now customers have the ability to select a level of payment suited to their data needs. The new pricing will create more options, for users of smartphones, and will provide “updated options” for users of regular phones, tablets and notebooks.

Come by any of our Verizon Wireless City locations and one of our wireless specialists will help you choose the right data plan to fit your needs.

5 Reasons Motorola’s Droid 3 stands out among it’s smartphone competitors

The Motorola Droid 3

Motorola brought us the original Droid with all it’s Android goodness followed by the Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global.  Now another sibling has been born, the Droid 3 – the same goodness you would expect to find in a Droid device but with some notable improvements.

The Droid 3 looks similar to it’s predecessors with a sleek design and is laid out in typical Android fashion.  The slide-out keyboard adds a little bulk to the Droid 3 but it is still considered slim by smartphone standards.  The Droid 3 also comes equipped with an 8 megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p full HD videos, a front facing camera, and it’s a global device.  I am sad to report the absence of Verizon’s 4G LTE on the Droid 3 but since 4G coverage is still lacking in many areas nationwide, its not a deal breaker.

5 Reasons why the Droid 3 outshines the rest of it’s family:

1.  Android 2.3

The Droid 3 comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the first of the Android lineup to come “out of the box” with Android latest and greatest OS.

2.  Dual-Core Processor

The Droid 3 is lightning fast with a dual-core processor and is rumored to have 27% faster multitasking performance over the DROID 2 Global thanks to its 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP chip.

3.  Screen Quality

The screen quality on the Droid 3 is pretty sweet and boasts a 4″ qHD display while delivering 960 x 640 pixels, similar to the iPhone 4′s Retina Display, but with a larger screen.

4.  Slide-Out Keyboard

The 5 row slide-out Qwerty keyboard, with a dedicated number row, is a great addition to the Droid lineup.  This is a great feature for conusmers who want to jump on the smartphone bandwagon but are hestitant due to the touch-screen keyboards.

5.  Price

The Droid 3 is reasonably priced at $199 with a standard 2-year contract with Verizon Wireless or you can snag the Droid 3 free-and-clear for about $459.

The Droid 3 will be avaiable through Verizon Wireless on June 14th so come by any  of our Verizon Wireless City locations and take a look at Motorola’s Droid 3 and other Android devices.

Hands-Free Options for your Mobile Device

Jabra Bluetooth Headset

I’m sure you have all heard the latest buzz surrounding the age old question “Do cell phone’s cause cancer?  A panel of experts reported to the World Health Organization that there is a possible link between cancer and hand-held phones, classifying cell phones as ”possibly carcinogenic to humans” and placed them in the same category as the pesticide DDT and gasoline engine exhaust.

I know it seems like every time we turn around “something” is being targeted for causing cancer but cell phone radiation has been a suspect for a while now and it’s better to be safe than sorry.  There are several hands-free options available should you decide to “play it safe” and get a headset:

 - Bluetooth Speakerphone or car kit

 - Bluetooth Earpiece

 - Wired Earpiece

 - Stereo Headset

All of the above mentioned devices allow you to make calls without having to hold your cell phone.  These options are a convenient way to use your cell phone hands-free while driving, minimize your risk of an accident and cell phone radiation exposure.

A Bluetooth headset attaches to your ear and can be used while in and out of the car.  A Bluetooth car kit or speakerphone can only be used while in the car. If you spend a considerable amount of time in your car and it doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth support, think strongly about investing in a portable Bluetooth speakerphone.

Sure, you can also use a wired earpiece while driving, but wearing headsets for extended periods can become uncomfortable or distracting after a while.

If you are addicted to your music and you like the idea of having a headset that can handle both tunes and calls, consider purchasing a set of stereo headphones. But do not drive while wearing them: It’s probably illegal in your state.

Come by any of our Wireless City locations and check out our large selection of headsets and accessories. We carry the latest hands-free options from Jabra, Plantronics, Skull Candy and more.

Have a great day

Sony’s Xperia Play Android Smartphone Takes Gaming To A New Level

Sony's Xperia Play

We first got word about the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play last August, but what happened to the illustrious “Playstation Phone”?  I have been wondering for months if the Xperia Play was fact or fiction but since seeing it come to life on my big screen in Sony’s “wierd” Superbowl commercial, I knew it would only be a matter of time.

Sony’s Xperia Play has been making its rounds overseas and is rumored to come stateside in “early spring”.  I recently got my hands on an Xperia Play and it is jammed packed with some very cool features, plus it’s the first Verizon smartphone to run on Android’s latest version, Gingerbread.

In a nutshell this is what you can expect to see when the Xperia Play is officially released.

The Xperia Play will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics and display games on the its 4-inch, 854×480 multi-touch LCD screen.  You will get 60 frames per second playback and up to 5 hours, 35 minutes of battery life per gaming session with the slide-out PlayStation Certified Controller.  Sounds pretty cool…huh?

In addition to the awesome gaming experience and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, you also get all the goodies you have come to love from an Android smartphone:  5 Megapixel autofocus camera, LED flash, stereo speakers, and Bluetooth/WiFi.  You also get to experience Sony’s Timescape UI layerTimescape is a feature of the UI of Sony Ericsson Android phones. They have developed a custom layer on top of the Android system called User eXperience (UX). Timescape allows the user to manage their communication needs such as Facebook, Twitter, emails, photos, short messages in a single place.

For all you “Gaming Fantatics” you will be happy to know that the Xperia Play will launch with 50 downloadable titles, play PSN games, and eventually be able to host original PlayStation titles.  According to numerous reports the Xperia will come with a “legendary” PS One title but it no one can confirm which one.  The Xperia also comes with a bunch of popular Android games including Asphalt 6, The Sims 3 and Tetris.  Local area multiplayer gaming is a treat, as you’ll be able to host a WiFi hotspot on one device and join the game with another.

Pricing has not been announced but we should see the Xperia Play sometime this spring. The latest buzz suggests the Xperia Play will be launced on May 26th, but you know how that goes….I will keep you posted.

Google Music Beta – Is it good enough to compete with iTunes and Amazon Cloud Player?

Google Music Beta

We all knew it was only a matter of time for Google to jump on the Music service bandwagon and now its official!  Google announced today its cloud based music service called  Google Music Beta . Essentially Google Music Beta service mirrors the Amazon Cloud Player service in functionality but you do not have the ability to purchase music.  However, I suspect Google is in the process of developing a marketplace similar to iTunes and Amazon.

Google’s Music Beta lets you upload your personal music collection to the cloud for streaming to your computer and other Android devices.  Your music and playlists are automatically synced from each device to “your cloud” so you always know where your music is.  You can also access your music offline so if your internet is down you can still jam to your tunes.  The best part of this whole deal is music storage is FREE while Google Music is in Beta and you get 20,000 tracks at any bitrate to be uploaded.  Google Music Beta supports MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC files.  Unfortunatly any DRM-protected files from iTunes cannot be uploaded.  Your music can be accessed from any PC and can be streamed from up to 8 Android devices.

To take advantage of the FREE music storage you need an invitation.  To get an invitation go to music.google.com and sign in with your Google account.  Once you get an email with a link to the service your in!  I am still waiting for my invite……………..

So there’s the skinny on Google Music Beta and it sounds like a great alternative to iTunes and Amazon Cloud Player.  The only thing that stinks is not having the ability to purchase music but hopefully Google is close to making that happen. I currently use both iTunes and the Amazon Cloud Player and enjoy both, but the selling point for me is the convenience of Google Music.  Mostly everything I do is through Google and having the ability to store my music there is an added bonus – everything is in one place!

Check out this video on how to use Google Music Beta

Have a great day :)
